MINI Space Calendar Design Competition: Winners Announced! June 03, 2009

Our fifth competition was flooded with nearly 4000 great backgrounds all uploaded in less than a month. You may have taken the idea of MINIMALISM to heart, but you certainly weren't minimal in the number or the quality of designs you submitted.

We were thrilled by so many great designs, and it was a challenge for our jury to pick the winning designs from the pool of talent. But they managed to narrow the selection down to just twelve jury prize winners which we will be announcing through Twitter and on this page one at a time. (If you are not already, follow us on twitter here). Stay tuned for the announcement of the top 12!

The 12 First Prizes by the MINI Design Team Jury
Each wins an Apple Macbook and their design and name featured in the MINI 2010 Calendar.

As we announce each winner here on MINI Space, we will release a statement from both the winning artist* and our Jury explaining how this carefully curated collection of twelve winning designs was selected out of the pool of 4000 entries submitted to the MINI Space Calendar Design Competition.

In addition to taking the original briefing into account (which asked for designs that spoke about MINIMALISM-The MINI initiative for reducing the environmental impact of cars, and Minimalism-The art movement) the judges looked for images that reflect the many styles of the MINI Space designers.

As the calendar is meant to serve as a portfolio of the MINI Space community, the judges picked designs that were both distinctive in technique and could also be matched to a month.

The overall collection is a result of designs in a variety of styles and techniques that together complete the goal of defining MINIMALISM across all the months of the year. So keep watching for our winners as they roll in here.

Calendar Winner
"corsirella's mini2"

by corsirella

corsirella: A single line flowing through a shape forming a MINI; I enjoyed making this design "in line" with the concept MINIMALISM.

MINISpace: The single line looks almost hand-drawn... and the little ode to MINIMALISM doodling out of the exhaust pipe gives an extra wink to lower CO2 emissions.

"talk about it"

by ralle

Ralle: Speech bubbles in different colors build the shape of the car. It's just that simple and minimal. I'm telling people to just "talk about it".

MINI Space: We can practically HEAR 50 voices saying "MINIMALISM", in green.

Calendar Winner
"mini-way"

by Demyguy

Demyguy: It's a reinterpretation of a MINI shape inspired by traditional japanese "Shodo" art, the ancient art of calligraphy influenced by Zen and practiced by Buddhist monks. The little symbol on the left means "Way" (japanese "Do") and it's placed near the big imaginary kenji symbol that means "MINI". I added two seals, like the original Shodo works, and the typical wooden frame. I like Shodo art because it's a very essential painting technique: very few and fast brush strokes, no corrections, and very evocative results.

MINI Space: Like the Haiku poem, perfect in its simplicity, this design makes us think of a blank slate, an ocean at dawn, an endless horizon. Ommm...

Calendar Winner
"minimold"

by minibruno

minibruno: My "minimold" is based on the ‘old-school' linex templates (always in bright eco-green) which are used to draw basic minimalistic shapes and letters. Mathematical in nature but even greater to use in creating your own personal designs (just like the MINI concept). It is timeless, but still has the potential to be used in making something unique and creative. Simple but impossible to improve upon. Now you're able to design your own MINI using the basic shapes of its design.

MINISpace: We want to have this "minimold" produced so that we can stencil the MINI everywhere.

Calendar Winner
"vine"

by dogtrombone

dogtrombone: Concept... clean, green and intriguing.
Technique... Leaves, vine and MINI all rendered in 3D, with post production work
in Photoshop.

MINISpace: For the first time ever the popular vote winner was also one of our jury's top picks, and for good reason. It takes a second look to see that each of those delicate plant leaves is actually the MINI, and a third to spot the red MINI resting on its stem. Fundamental forms in both design, car, and nature come together in this design and perfectly describe MINIMALISM.

Calendar Winner
"miniclip"

by j303

j303: I wanted to create a simple design with a simple item that at the end talked by itself about the MINIMALISM concept both ways, MINI related and art related. I wanted a straight line that could become alive after some twists, a clip is one of those few simple items out of a straight line that can help a lot in different ways, it reflects security and help & so does MINI.

MINISpace: A great little object that could be useful around our office to secure paperwork and decorate too!

Calendar Winner
"reMINIsence"

by iamtatar

iamtatar: A tribute to youth, innocence, and simplicity. Reminiscence is all about retrospection and reaffirmation; resulting in the reduction of the unnecessary, reusing the vitals, in a continually regenerative process.

MINISpace: We loved the whimsy behind this image, with the car coming to life inside the child's half-blown bubble. It speaks about future generations and imagining things today that will benefit our children and our planet.

Calendar Winner
"CMYni"

by sk2

sk2: Less is more - the idea of minimalism. Only three colors (Cyan, Magneta, Yellow) were used, but the result is more colorful.

MINISpace: The basic bright colors make us think of summer, bright printed shirts, and tropical weather. Perfect for our August image.

Calendar Winner
"mini earthtones"

by tillathenun

tillathenun: A series of MINI in earthy colours.

MINISpace: "mini earthtones" was selected because of its organic color scheme and repetitive use of the fundamental forms. It makes us think of the autumn season.

Calendar Winner
"galanty show"

by dixe

dixe: One of the oldest and most simple way to express - the shadow of my hands is creating the silhouette of MINI.

MINISpace: A little bit childlike and a little bit creepy, this design interpreted the fundamental elements in a really unique way and is just perfect for the Halloween month of October.

Calendar Winner
"and not just efficient..."

by szabidali

szabidali: I wanted to express the MINI efficiency in every aspect (like reduced co2 emissions, less fuel consumption, light weight engine) through simple shapes, beautiful colors and suggestive design.

MINISpace: A wind-up MINI might be that revolutionary next step in environmentally-friendly automobiles. But who would be strong enough to get it going?

Calendar Winner
"miniwords"

by fubbina

fubbina: A word is so minimal...but so full of significance. Words, mixed together could create everything you want.

MINISpace: In this design the MINI just speaks for itself.
