The MINI & Triennale CreativeSet project presents Dodo Arslan, already a winner of the 2006 MINI Design Award for his project "Minimesis". In the new space dedicated to Italian contemporary design, the artist presents "Le attrazioni della materia" [literally: The Attractions of Matter] , curated by Fabio Verdelli.
On show is a selection of projects by Dodo Arslan. They represent the artist's multi-faceted creative universe, made up of complex polymorphic elements which interact with a diverse array of materials: From leather, metal and Plexiglas, to glass, carbon steel, marble and polyurethane. Although the artist rarely uses the canonical figures of solid geometry (parallelepipeds, prisms, spheres, etc.), his works often convey the concepts of structure and framing (the framework, the weave, the underlying fabric).
For Arslan, the figures originate at the precise point where he finds the materials which best interpret them, and it is precisely that experimentation which represents one of the distinctive features of his creative process. In order to discover the real nature of an object, Arslan dismantles it and analyses its components and materials.
His projects display the use of technical skills in conjunction with manual skills, and result from a combination of traditional methods and engineering techniques.
The artist is inspired by the idea of developing a project "in fieri" [literally: continuously, in progress], proceeding by trial and error, and making progressive adjustments as required.
Very often, his inspiration comes from a desire to challenge the laws of physics, to test the characteristics of a metal, the hardness of a stone or the elasticity of a polymer.
As Silvana Annicchiarico writes: "In the panorama of Italian contemporary design, Arslan is a solitary "artifex" [artist]. He is a kind of Dr. Frankenstein of design, who assembles forms and substances in pursuit of his own dream of manipulating the matter, and giving "life" to an object."
