Giulio Iacchetti: Disobedient Objects at the MINI & Triennale Creative Set May 20, 2009

Disobedient Objects

The Triennale Design Museum presents Giulio Iacchetti - Disobedient Objects

The title of the exhibition comes from the definition Giulio Iacchetti himself gives to the selected objects on display. The designer describes these objects as "disobedient," according them a paradigmatic and symbolic value in respect to his entire body of work. The objects used by Iacchetti range from chairs, knives, vases and lamps to water taps, sofas and even biscuits.

In his projects, Iacchetti time and again examines the necessity of amplifying and reinforcing the democratization of design. In the process, he always takes into consideration the dialectic exchange between culture and the art market.
This explains Iacchetti's dedicated promotion of collective initiatives and joint designs, which can enrich a project with new stimulus and ideas.

The designer's approach is a conceptual one: Before Iacchetti works on the object, he develops ideas. After analysing the zeitgeist and its contradictions, he goes on to create objects which have the capacity to generate meaning, thereby invoking scraps, fragments and contrasts.

Iacchetti's "Disobedient Objects" at times result in biting provocation (such as the "St Peter Squeezer" lemon squeezer, and the "Vespa Table" coffee table). Furthermore, they sometimes also question the form of the world itself (like the "Odnom" globe, and the bench-cum-roof-cum-shelter, "Flexible Bench"). The "disobedience" is characterized by a natural irony, radical but not snobby, aware of the need for a new artistic language. This effect is exemplified in the Clay Font project, inspired by the original formulation of lettering on drilled bricks.
