MINI Space Reports from Blickfang 2011

Last weekend, one of the design world's most exciting events descended on the city of Zurich. Its name? Blickfang. The name means "eye-catching" in German, and this event certainly catches plenty of eyes at what many hail as the most important European designer destination of the year. Your MINI Space team was there to bring you a piece of the action.

With more than 220 designers on 4 floors dedicated to fashion, design, furniture and accessories, a whirlwind tour of this creative playground was in order. Here’s a run-down on what was on offer, along with some standout recommendations.

Charlotte Talbot

Blickfang Selected was 1st up to bat. This designated area is where key curators are invited to select emerging designers to showcase their work, taking pride of place at the entrance of the exhibition. Here, Charlotte Talbot's simple but elegant design immediately caught our attention - with a new and novel approach to storage.

DÉCOR:
The Lights by Jiam Telia were amazing - especially since we witnessed him constructing them with mere rubber bands and cardboard - not at all what you think they'd be made from on first glance.

FASHION:
The fashion area was brimming with shoppers — the beauty of Blickfang is that you can chat to the designers directly and buy their products at the fair. The whole thing was pleasantly overwhelming : Scarves, hats, gloves, shawls, bags, shoes, boots, slippers, sunglasses, a new pair of ears?!

You name it we saw it, we wanted it, and we unfortunately didn’t have time to buy it! Our fashion recommendation — fink und star.

HOME:
The work of Estelle Gassmann fuses a combination of modern & vintage by using porcelain and plastic in her works to create a unique visual aesthetic.

JEWELRY:
In terms of trinkets and treasures, jewelry on exhibition was aplenty. Our favorite designer here was Saskia Diez, whose beaded necklaces sit around the shoulders and bring a little bang to any outfit.

Her ‘paper bags’ looked prisitine on show, neat and rather delicate, and when shown what one looks like at 2 years old I was gobsmacked at the sturdiness and how well it had worn.

FURNITURE:
Wandering ‘round all say gave us plenty of chances to test out all the sofas, floors and playareas on exhibit.

Moody Couch

To close the day’s events, the Blickfang Prize was awarded for best emerging designer, and with 220 candidates to choose from, no one was envious of the massive decision the judges had to make.

To see the winning design and designer, along with exclusive interviews with the event’s curators Stefan & Saskia Diez and Blickfang CEO Jennifer Reeves, watch the film now.

A design which stuck out for me were Moody Couches — basically massive throws which can go over any chair or couch, instantly inviting you to chill out after hours on your feet!!

We found inspiring surprises around every corner, reminding us that good design is often about that very emotion – the joy of discovery and the feel of fresh ideas.
