MINI and Burton’s Creative Use of Space Award Winners Announced!

Year one of the partnership between MINI and Burton is in the books, and what a beautiful year it was. It all began as a call to action for returning to roots in the sport, a pull of the spotlight toward the young men and women exemplifying a spirit of creativity that's part of every snowboarder's DNA, yet had been lacking in the sport's competitive events. The response and its resounding answer blew our minds.

During the course of this year's Burton Global Open Series we found creative angles galore, and have certainly done our share of the talking. So without further ado, let us present to you the young man who's simple Facebook vote set the wheels in motion for him and three groms of his choice to fly to one one of next year's BGOS events free as birds. 21-year-old Adam Fuller of Warren, Vermont has scored an all-inclusive trip for four to a stop on next year's tour - on a Creative Use of Space sponsorship.

The pair of CUoS award winners selected by the MINI Facebook community for their consistently creative shred are Ms. Cilka Sadar of Slovenia, and Mr. Yale Cousino of Vermont. You'll find our interviews with them below. The 28-year-old Cousino's been killing it competitively since '06, and former gymnast Cilka's a bit more of a new star on the scene, achieving her biggest results within the last two years. Both delivered massive efforts during this year's competitions and have been rewarded handsomely. The purse for each was 25 thousand dollars.

Cilka Sadar

You are this year's women's winner of the Creative Use Of Space Award - how do you feel about the award MINI has introduced?
I am super stoked about it. I'm surprised on the number of votes I got, which I appreciate a lot. I'm happy I got the award for the creative rider because this is one of the most important and fun things in snowboarding. Don't be boring, keep it interesting.

I think the CUOS award is a great idea for riders, so we have another motivation to be as creative as we can be. Its really cool because it's not like any other competition, you don't have to stick your run or do super technical tricks in it to win. It was something new this year so we weren't really aware of it in the beginning, but for the next year I'm sure a lot of riders will work even more on creativity of their runs, at least at BGOS events.

Did you practice a special trick for the competition?
No, I didn't practice any special trick for the competition. I just try to do my best every time, I try for my riding to look mellow and stylish.

Will you invest the prize money in something creative?
Hmm...haven't been really thinking what I am going to do with it yet. But since I got it for creativity I promise I will be creative with spending it.

They say if you win a challenge your celebration never stops - will you revel in the Creative Use of Space Award win in a special or artistic MINI way?
I have to thank all the people that voted for me in some way so I was thinking about throwing a small, special party at some very artistic place. Plus, everybody will have to be really creative with their dance moves.

Ms. Sadar, we really like your style.

You are this year's men's winner of the Creative Use Of Space Award - how do you feel about the award MINI has introduced?
I am beyond thrilled to receive this award! It helps me keep doing what I love to do.

I think it's a really good thing for the sport because it's all about double corks and 1260's these days which don't get me wrong, I think are really sick and I love to do/watch them, but this award gives riders the chance to be totally creative and free in their run which is how snowboarding basically began. It's kind of letting us go back to our roots and still have a chance at some BIG money!

Did you practice a special trick for the competition?
I learned front flips off jump knuckles in the beginning of the year and had been doing them a lot throughout the season and I did a couple in my run. Also I was having fun doing "tri-pods" a lot in the past month and did one up the last jump.

Will you invest the prize money in something creative?
Disneyland! Haha just kidding but I have been thinking about starting some sort of clothing line so I hope to use a bit of the money to get that going.

You are very well known for your creativity and technical performance - does the winning of the Creative Use of Space Award affirm this even more for you?
I definitely think so! I'm so glad that everyone liked my run and the creativity that I put in to it! I love just having fun riding and being creative with it and not stressing about contest results so this award gave me the opportunity to try to do just that.

We couldn't have summed things up any better on this end, except to say that all parties involved deserved major props for their efforts this season, and that we're stoked they got 'em. Congrats to everyone who made the CUoS Award's first year such a success, can't wait to see how it all goes down once the snow starts to fall next season and we're all standing sideways again.
