While in Trieste we got to see all of the finalist photographers present their work in person to the jury and press. This final round of judging gives the photographers a chance to explain their works directly to the panel of judges, and creates an open exchange between the critics and the artists.
In an informal and supportive setting we all crowded in with other members of the press and the jury, made up of leading fashion and photography experts, to got a personal tour through each collection.
A few of our favorites included:
One image from the series "11 Original ways of Starting a New Life
Monica Lozano Red (Mexico-US) Series called "11 Original ways of Starting a New Life"
This series impressed us, not only because of the photographer's sharp and precise style, but because of the thought that went into the research and creation of this series. "11 Original Ways of Starting a New Life" if based on the stories of immigrants all over the world who were caught while trying to cross into new countries. The artist found a way to interpret each person's story in one image and chose a topic which is controversial and also shared information about a highly politicized issue.
One image from the series "Sons of the Rock"
David Fovrod (Swiss) and Thomas Rousset (French) Series called "Sons of the Rock"
This photo duo created a fantastical world in their series "Sons of the Rock". Set in a make-believe mountain town they staged each scene and their subjects were costumed before they were directed into action by the photographers. These carefully staged violent, lonely, and playful scenes were beautifully shot and as a series seemed to form a world of it's own that has all the vitality of circus. We were impressed by every stage of this series.
Clare Bottomley's photo presentation at ITS
Clare Bottomley (UK) Winner of the online call for entries in the ITS#PHOTOweb competition that appeared on MINI Space.
Self-portraiture is no small task but Clare Bottomley's series was intimate and confrontational in its frankness. It takes courage to make yourself the subject of a photo series based on originality. For her efforts Clare will was awarded the SVA PHOTOGLOBAL Award which gives her a full scholarship to the one year "Photoglobal" photography course at School of Visual Arts in NYC.
