In the beginning, Sir Alec Issigonis created the MINI.
Want to know what happens next? Consult MINI Design, whichmay very well be the ultimate MINI-lover's Bible. Auto designer Othmar Wickenheiser has teamed up with Gert Hildebrand, the lead designer at MINI, to produce a volume entirely dedicated to the design of this enigmatic and iconic car.
The authors set out to show the evolution of MINI through the years, from Issigonis' original 1959 model to the sleek Concept Cars of today. Along the way, expect never-before-published technical sketches and beautifully detailed full-color drawings that give insight into every stage of the design process. Glossy photos, interviews and articles complete this 400-page homage just in time for the MINI 50th birthday this year.
MINI Space sat down with Gert Hildebrand to talk about his career in design and ask a few questions that don't appear in MINI Design:
Q: If you weren't designing cars for a living, what would you most like to be doing instead?
A: As a kid I dreamt about being a truck driver or pilot. Both dreams were fulfilled, I drove trucks as a student to the Near East and throughout Europe to earn my education and I own a glider pilot´s licence. But my real dream was to become a car designer which I did for the best brand: MINI.
Q: You've acted as a jury member for some of the MINI Space Design competitions. Of all the past design competitions on MINI Space, which has been your favorite?
A: The MINI Space 2010 calendar competition, with his unique and outstanding graphical ideas and creative craftsmanship. One calendar is already hanging over my desk at MINI Design. Congratulations to all MINI Space participants!
Q: You are responsible for defining styles for MINI. If you had to define your personal style by only wearing one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A: My Tissot PR 526 GL Seastar 1976 automatic wrist watch which I have ever since 1976 and which I will wear into the future, whatever TIME will bring.

Hey MINI Space users! Thanks for all your great questions. The contest is now closed, but we have sent a selection of winning entries to MINI lead designer Gert Hildebrand and he has answered!
The latest iteration of the Mini is a large station wagon type Mini. Have you thought of designing a Classic size Mini? A Mini that's even smaller than the base model mini geared to classic mini enthusiasts.
Cheers, Dirk
