Photographer Monica Lozano impressed us in a big way at ITS#EIGHT with her ability to tell a whole story with each stark, honest picture in her amazing new project, "Borders: 11 Original Ways of Starting a New Life." In this edition of Portfolio of the Week, the MINI Space Team gives you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the photo shoot, and Monica talks to us about borders, her inspirations and dreams, and her favorite place in the world.
Q: As an artist, what do you like particularly about photography?
A: An image can speak for itself and I like that whoever looks at this image has their own criteria, so they are free to choose the meaning.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your award-winning project for ITS#EIGHT and where the concept came from?
A: It's my baby! Haha...
Well, I developed this idea specifically for the ITS#EIGHT Competition. This year the theme was "Originality" and I thought immediately about my life in the border town of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. I wanted to show the originality of this place, then I thought about all the people who come to my city and try to cross the border to the United States. I did some research and found all these amazing stories about people all over the world trying to cross illegally into other countries and focused on their unique experiences. That's how it all started!
Q: What do borders mean to you, as a creative person who lives and works cross-culturally between Mexico, Spain and the US?
A: Being raised in a border town has influenced my life in many ways. I embrace the contrast between different cultures, which is why there's a lot of variety in my personal style. I was very lucky to be born with a dual citizenship (Mexican/American) and was always able to cross the border freely, but I also saw the negative and sad side of what a border can do. Thanks to all this I am here today and I can speak for the ones who don't have a voice.
Q: What are your three biggest goals for the coming year?
A: First, travel around to different places in Mexico, the United States, Germany and Spain showing this photography project in different Art Exhibits, like the one I have in September 2009 at Munich Airport, Terminal 2, "Spazio Italia," thanks to the Award I was given at ITS#EIGHT by Air Dolomiti. I also want to go to NYC and study the "Photo Global" course at the School of Visual Arts in September 2010. And, most importantly: keep finding myself.
Q: OK, so, if you (and only you) knew that the world were going to end tomorrow, how would you spend the very last day?
A: At my grandmother's house in Mexico, eating Mexican corn on the cob from Borunda's Park without a doubt!
