Single Room Hotel in a billboard

On a cold and wet night in February, following a rowdy Babyshambles concert, a friend and I had a strange hotel experience.  While it had nothing to do with any after concert mischief, it did involve us staying in a very bizarre hotel room.

The "Single Room Hotel" was actually a temporary installation by French artist Etienne Boulanger and was constructed in context of the project Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum within four sides of an advertising billboard. It was located in what was once the "no-man's land" of the Berlin wall which is now a sculpture park. It proved quite difficult to find (there were no windows) but once inside the 32 sq.m space, the hotel was much like any other 2 star hotel: simple yet tasteful décor, a TV, En-suite bathroom with hot water and obligatory slippers.

Boulanger works with the "plug-in" concept of architecture: adding temporary living spaces to already existing urban conditions. He even leased out the advertising space to finance the work! For just 20 Euros a night, the hotel was booked out for its whole four month existence. But I managed to get a booking just in time and spend a night in this cool AND very cozy billboard...

My night at the "Single Room Hotel":

Might be, if Berlin kept its no mans lands long enough. An alternative to the electric heater ( the only form of heating when I was there) should be thought about too. Berlin winters can be tough.

great stuff joni! Like the video. Also like the idea. Is a place like that thinkable for year round usage?
