T-Shirt Competition: Interview with the Winner November 10, 2009

Marissa Meyer won the MINI Space T-Shirt competition with her understated yet powerful design, "Heartflow". Now she joins us to talk about the concept behind her iconic image, and the serious cause behind "Let Love Flow." Read on to learn more about this talented and conscientious South African MINI Spacer and how you can get your hands on the shirt.

T-Shirt Winner Interview

MINI Space: How did you come up with the idea for your winning design?

Marissa Meyer: I wanted to create a simple and universally recognizable design using both typography and icon.

I settled on using the heart-shape, as a universal icon of love, containing the message "Let Love Flow" in a loosely hand-drawn font that floats inside the space of the heart. The letters appear to respect each other's space, as we as humans should too.

The HIV theme is represented by an AIDS ribbon turned on its side to become a free, abstract fish "swimming " between the letters. The fish seems to push out an overflow of "love" from the letter 'F'.

Marissa Meyers' Winning Design
MS: Do you feel that living in South Africa makes the HIV/AIDS issue behind the "Let Love Flow" theme especially significant for you?

MM: Yes. In South Africa, we hear about HIV/AIDS all the time, which is not surprising considering that recent surveys have shown that every year around 600,000* people die in our country due to the virus. In some provinces, it has been estimated that close to one out of every 4 people is currently living with HIV/AIDS.

MS: Did this background motivate your decision to participate in the competition?

MM: Having worked on HIV/AIDS campaigns before has helped me grow in knowledge around the issue and gave me the confidence to enter the competition.

Even though South Africa has come a long way in addressing this epidemic, I still believe much more can be done in creating awareness and tackling the problem. I definitely think it is significant for me and other South Africans to contribute in any way we can.

Hi MINI Spacers,

Thank you for your feedback here.

The theme “Let love flow” was the overall theme of the Life Ball in 2009, our partner for this competition. You can learn about the Life Ball and their mission here http://www.minispace.com/en_us/projects/life-ball-2009/ .

Thank you so much Mini Space Team! I have just received my 'Let Love Flow' t-shirt in the mail and I am thrilled to say the least. It's a perfect fit and the quality of the T is fantastic! What else can you expect from such an awesome brand? I wish the MINI Space Team all the best for the future and hoping that the T will do really well in sales so that Life Ball can reap the benefits towards the good cause of HIV/AIDS. Much blessings.

heh usually some things watched from a different angle projects a point of view that you can see only after you became aware of it. Like in this case, excellent remark on Nola's post, but good work although.

rightly or wrongly, for me, this has the totally wrong message especially in terms of HIV. I work in community investment and "let love flow" sends messages of not thinking, not saying NO, and even if one wants to take it that far, no condom. these are just the very first thoughts that spring to mind and not hours of deliberation and in the end, isn't that what tee;s are about. quick, initial thoughts... i love my Mini but wouldn't be caught in that shirt
