Trend Report: Puppy Cams, Instagram, and Spider Silk

The MINI Space team scours the web for the most creative finds so you don't have to. We've done our homework, now we're ready to share our results.

Baby Animal Cams

Video streaming by Ustream

If you’re one of the 60 million puppy-hungry procrastinators (we’re not judging) who’ve tuned in to watch the Shuna Ibu Puppy Cam over the last few years, you’ll be pleased to know it’s back for a fourth season. For those of you are staring lost but curious at your computer screen, this puppy litter live-stream has become a true viral phenomenon. They’re like the office pet without the clean-up responsibilities. But you gotta catch them quick – these ridiculously cute newborns are losing their puppy fat fast. If you’re late on the game, here’s our pick of the rest:

Panda Cam

Panda Cam – San Diego Zoo has known of bears’ uncanny ability to work a camera ever since things got heated in Anchorman. And if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. There’s seven pandas on camera right now, but look out especially for Su Lin, whose name means “A little bit of something very cute”.

Koala Cam

Koala Cam – Koala Cam needs a long-game tactic, but get lucky and it’s worth it. Koalas sleep 22 hours a day and only move for four minutes of them, but an all-night stakeout will reap adorable rewards.

Beluga Cam

Beluga Whale Cam – Did you know that Beluga Whales are “the pearls of the planet”? Vancouver Aquarium did. Their beluga whale cam is spreading the word fast. So silky! So soothing! Settle in with a tub of ice cream and a Sigur Ros album and you’ll never want to go out again.

Trendy Tennies

Trendy Tennies

Tennis is hardly a new trend – that love affair has been going strong ever since we discovered the joy of sitting in the sun drinking Pimm's, eating strawberries, and watching good looking athletes run around in their tiny tennis whites. But whether you’ve been rooting for Nadal, or cheering on Djokovic, there’s a must-have accessory that unites everyone in one big ‘Awwww’ – and that’s these little guys. Designed by Dominik Langhammer of Loony Design, they’re perfect for stashing your keys, pens, or dishtowels. Who wouldn’t want a little helper like this around?

Competitive Latté Art

Wake up and smell the specialty coffee! Local roasters are popping up everywhere and chances are there’s a specialty coffee shop not too far from your own doorstep. With hardcore caffeine geeks now rebranding themselves as latté artists, coffee has become more than a beverage – it’s a form of self-expression. Like all other forms of visual art, latté art is practiced at an amateur and professional level. In fact, the world’s elite latté artists meet once a year to show off their steamed milk moves and compete in the World Latté Art Championship. Next time you are looking for artistic inspiration, check out the wealth of amazing coffee creations circling latté art blogs around the web and try your hand in your own kitchen.

Gossamer Spider Silk Capes

Most of us would cringe at the idea of finding our wardrobe filled with spider webs, but we think we may have found an exception to this otherwise obvious rule. Godley & Peers show us that skilled hands and a bit of patience can go a long way in shaping opinion. A team of 80 craftsman and 1.2 million Golden Orb spiders were hard at work for over seven years on the African isle of Madagascar to create a cloak made entirely of spider silk, and we think it’s quite possibly the most stunning garment we’re ever stumbled upon on the web. We only wish we could have seen it ourselves when it was on display in London at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Nerd alert:

-Spider silk has been harvested safely from a variety of species the world nearly 300 years, though this is the first successful weaving of a garment. The last real attempt at “spider milking” was by Jesuit Priest Father Paul Camboué in the 1880’s, also on Madagascar.

-Ounce for ounce, it is in fact stronger than steel. But considering the fact this complete cape is so weightless that people can’t even tell they’re holding it if they have their eyes closed, we think it’ll be quite some time before we see our skyscrapers built from it.

No spiders or arachnophobes were harmed in the making of this cape.
