New Album, Old Friends: How Christina Perri’s Wanderlust Led Her Back Home

Is it possible to get Wanderlust when you're already on the road? What does it feel like to experience an urge to escape when you are chronically on the move?

Yes. It's called homesickness.

So how do you get away...from being away? You go home.

For singer/songwriter Christina Perri, the past year has been one crazy rocketship ride to pop-sweetheart stardom. One minute she was another struggling twenty-something in L.A. with a guitar and a head full of love songs, waiting tables at a café just to keep herself afloat. Then, last June, her breakthrough break-up song "Jar of Hearts" was featured on the Fox show So You Think You Can Dance.

Christina Perri arrives.

Viewers around the country were touched by the brave honesty of her wrenching melody and heartsore lyrics, maybe recognizing a piece of themselves in her story of love lost and shattered self-respect pieced back together. They perked up their ears and ran to their laptops, and thus began the download typhoon that would catapult the heartstring-plucking single to #17 on Billboard's Hot 100.

Since then she's barely had a second to breathe. While this whirlwind success story is a hands-down dream come true for the 24-year-old Philadelphia native, non-stop touring through unfamiliar towns can be a lonely road, too. For a girl whose songs are all about love-about "making people feel less broken and alone," to borrow her own poignant turn of phrase-she's suddenly finding herself with precious little time to relax with the friends and family she cares about most.

So where Wanderlust, for most of us, is that nagging feeling that we need to run away from familiar territory and go someplace new, Perri's yearning to run back to everything she knows and loves.

Having just signed to Atlantic Records and with her debut album, lovestrong., newly minted on May 10th, it's the perfect time for Perri to turn her eyes homeward and give herself a much needed chance to breathe. The event she planned for May 12th was an album release party, a Wanderlust party, and a homecoming party, all wrapped into one lovely package.

The party, exterior.

Like the eye of a hurricane, the event offered a comparatively peaceful moment smack in the middle of her spring/summer U.S. tour. It was both a public acknowledgement of how far she's come, and a highly personal way to remember where she began, and the people who were there supporting her on the rocky road in between. Arriving fresh from promoting her album on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, she met her friends and family on the rooftop of the Hollywood Tower Hotel.

The main theme of the night was simply being together with her nearest and dearest, and having some good old-fashioned fun. As the sun went down over L.A., guests ate tasty treats from Christina's favorite restaurant, 101 Café, and snapped silly pics in a photo booth, both brought in especially for the occasion.

The photo booth for family and friends.

For Perri, getting together with MINI was a no-brainer: it's her favorite car. Not only has she been a MINI owner since 2004, but the car features prominently in the new music video for her single "Arms." She's even got the MINI logo tattooed on her foot. Now that's real devotion.

015 Rally Dakar: Barely time to catch your breath

The competitors at the 2015 Rally Dakar now have half of the roughly 9,000 kilometres through the heart of South America behind them. Their reward is a rest day.
