Osoppo (Udine), 9th July 2008. For those who don’t know it, this is not a day like any days in a place like any other, but it’s one of the days people had been waiting for in one of the most important and acclaimed world reaggae festivals: the Rototom Sunsplash. Tonight’s schedule is pretty much rich indeed: starting with Suoni Mudu coming from Bari, Italy, on to a queen of reggae music, Marcia Griffith; and then on, with Ras Shiloh and Asia Dub Foundation. Until finally going wild, dancing the dawn away, with the lord of the dancehall, Mr David Rodigan. But Rototom is not only a gatherer of world famous reggae artistis – it is a ten day feast and meeting among debates, courses, stalls and no-stop music coming from every corner of the park for all the people who through reggae music share a lifestyle, characterized by the concept of “peace, love and brotherhood”, the real one, but also by consciousness (the “conscious reggae”). Many many foreigners this year, a spanish invasion, but also Austrian, French, Swedish, English people... and lots of beautiful, happy children, some of which have grown up with the festival. An event that’s more and more international, more and more appreciated and not to be missed, not only because of the high level of the musical offer, but also on a humane level, that’s just as precious.

Pulled together under the banner of an international reggae festival, the Rototom Sunsplash Festival acts as a gathering of European rasta and sympathizers whose disdain for organization and all other things “Babylon” is well noted in countless songs. So the gathering functions very loosely with campsites and kitchens, stands and booths for handicrafts and rasta-friendly political issues (though officially the rasta themselves have no interest in politics besides the decriminalization of their ceremonial ganja). The place is a park, but the people transform it to create a zone that fully represents and serves the needs of its subcultural inhabitants.
