Agents Report:

After passing through Gragnano, Furore and Amalfi we finally reached Ravello, small village known for being the European cultural capital of the Neapolitan coast and in particular for its music festival. One of the aim of our mission was to listen to citizens’ opinions about the under construction auditorium in Ravello, projected by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The views of the people we met were on the whole positive, above all in relation to the possible tourist and economic advantages. After visiting the tourist centre of the coast, Positano, we left toward Vietri sul Mare. Once we got there, we were surrounded by ceramics: after all, our mission in that city was to explore Solimene, a big ceramics factory. The old building was built by architect Paolo Soleri in the 50s, and today is completely integrated with the small city. There, we interviewed Giovanna, one of the founder’s daughters, who told us the factory’s history and the citizens’ reaction in front of its construction, who were really skeptical. By now, it’s pretty evident that after 50 years, the citizens have accepted and also valued the Solimene factory. During our trip back we noticed the differences between the buildings along the coast and that ones settled in the area of Sorrento and in the Neapolitan suburbs. Original Briefing

Q: What makes an architectural landmark fit in a beautiful coastline?

The idyllic atmosphere of the Amalfi coast has put squarely on the grand tour of tourists seeking deep meaningful experience for their dollar before checking back into their office jobs. Exceedingly proud of their coastline, the locals have a suspicious eye towards any new human interventions in the coastal beauty. They tend to enshrine old masterpieces while bucking against any changes to the status quo. While Paolo Soleri's Solimene ceramic factory in Vietri, has been praised (dubiously) as ”one of the most important building of the twentieth century,” garnering its designer an honorary citizenship in Vietri, other new projects are fiercely resisted. Oscar Niemeyer's Auditorium in Ravello has been at the center of harsh debates, fragmenting the community, especially environmentalists, to the point where the Salerno court had to be called in to mediate. Despite the Auditorium being considered a future wound on Amalfi’s beauty, hundreds or architects and politicians signed petitions in support of Niemeyer’s design helping to push the project into construction.
