Europaradiso is the plan the Israeli entrepreneur would want to carry out 10 km outside the «city of Pythagoras». Casinos, shopping centres, theatres, fitness centres, acquaparks and thousand of beds. Silence, dark streets, noone around. Promenade. Biagio prepares a sandwich for us. «Where do the youngs go in Crotone?» «The youngs in Crotone? There aren’t any. They find a job somewhere else, settle for lakes in the summer and never come back. Europaradiso surely isn’t the soluzione, on the contrary... property speculation and private interests.» Domenico, the fisherman we meet at Porto Nuovo («New Harbour»), is angry at Eni’s platforms, the pollution of the sea, the lack of purification plants. Everyone seems to have their own enemy to fight. So the very Europaradiso Commettee, that sees the PD as an obstacle (renamed «Poltrone&Divani» - that’s «Armchairs&Couches»). The last picture of the day is the ironic smile of Rino Gaetano: tailcoat, top hat, jeans, trainers and ukulele. 27 years after his death, his statue («Rino’s only motionless thing») has been placed in the square dedicated to him. Why build a strategically useless port near a toxic waste dump?

Calabria, according to the European Union, is the poorest region of Europe, and Crotone the poorest in Calabria. Before the 70s, the province of Crotone could boast of being the little Milan of the South. Once populated with factories from Pertusola, Montedison, and Cellulosa Calabra, the area constituted the first (and only) pole of industrial Calabria, a small exception in the historic problem of the development of southern Italy. But any observer could easily see that there were problems ahead. For example, the fact that the factories built during the Fascist era, were already obsolete in the 70s and yet never renovated. These old factories produced metals, chemicals and paper, but also victims, giving Crotne one of the highest cancer rates in Italy. And in 1995, almost all the factories closed, sending Crotone into a tailspin. They’ve been trying to build a modern port in the province since the 1950s, but the project is intermittently restarted and abandoned. A couple of years ago, the province got some incentive as an Israeli investment firm had plans to build Europaradiso, a Las Vegas style resort, about 10km from the provincial capital, but things are not looking good for the project. After so many failures, can these projects work or will they sink even further into poverty?
