Heat, everywhere. From the ground, from the sky. From the speakers on the stage, from the metal heads. The gates of hell opened for three days, and its malicious light involved something like 5000 inflamed people, ready to sell their souls as easily as they drink an ice-cold beer in a summer night. More than 50 demons - raging guitarists, surgical bass players, inhuman drummers, amazing singers - who turned mud, sweat, the very smell of this Arena Nord - making sulfur something to laugh about - into a magical scenography, just what it takes to host an event such as Gods of Metal. Our mission started on the smoking-hot road, since this passion was born on the streets, where the double kick is a holy fire, among all those guys uptight girls keep considering as geeks (like those chicks are normal). Between t-shirts that really are relics, when coming with a date on their backs, because the point is to let everyone know how long you've been into metal for, making the others envious, like those who spent the same number of years trying to convince people that they're not posers, that they're serious about it. The interview we made to two over-30s proved this to us: we're not talking about generational music, nor songs about sexy and unreachable leaders. We're talking about a real population here, with its religion and traditions. A nomadic tribe whose individuals are often invisible among the crowd, bashful because they belong to something else, less voluble and more pragmatic than the others', so laminated in their lame and reassuring routines. The land to conquer, the architecture to subvert, the ideal background where to express unity: Arena Nord. The people have migrated, they have settled down the 72 hours it takes to state: "OK, this is the other side of the coin of this paranoid rock Emilia you were laying down". The time for sons to reign on their fathers has come once again, the darkness is falling and their masters are ready to wake up, to get out of the coffins where commercial and corporate logics confined them, as if they were scary and contagious vampires, to take back their power on a world that - back in the 80s - was more or less their own. Our trip is over, theirs has just begun.

It's more than a decade now that the Gods of Metal festival, taking place between Milan and Bologna, is inviting glorious - and often aging - bands on Italian ground, to delight Italian and international audiences. This year the Arena Parco Nord will turn into a vast metalhead camping for a three day headbanging marathon. Iron Maiden, Slayer or Judas Priest may not be gods, nor likely to appreciate godly virtues, but they're gonna rock their fans out of their shoes, be them studded boots or cheap nikes.
