Agents Report:

Genoa is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Apennine Mountains, which determines the city appearance and structure in all spheres. The streets are narrow and steep or follow the contour lines in a meandering way. Elevators or entrances directly to the rooftop were built to deal with the steep slopes. The topography also determines the attitude of Genovese people, often more connected to the sea far away than to the countryside right in the north of the town, no matter if they life close to the harbour or up the hill in Forte Quezzi. Genovese people prefer the cost, they consider this area the real city centre although it stands in a less dense area overviewing stony beaches with football fields, small boats and lots of blue parasols. We focused on the different connections between Genoa and the sea (Porto Antico, Centro storico, Quezzi, Marassi, Boccadasse, Nervi) and how borders like the Sopraelevata influence the connection to the sea. Since the redevelopment started in the early 90s, the Porto Antico is becoming a place for commercial centers and leisure activities. Tourists as well as Italian people spend their free time there. Genovese people are not strongly connected to this area as it was not publicly accessible during its usage as docks but they are proud to have such an economically successful and still quite heterogeneous development in their city. Inhabitants of the Biscione do not really understand the question about their connection to the sea. They just refer to the incredible view over the city and the sea with its huge containerships and cruisers, which makes impossible and for lots of them is impossible to imagine moving away from Genova. Those who did keep anyway a nostalgic and longing attitude toward the city. The opinions about the Sopraelevata are as manifold as its use (at the same time a motorway, a parking lot, and a roof for souvernirs dealers). While it forms a visual and physical barrier that separates the city from the shore it gives a great moment when entering the city and getting a glimpse of its feeling right away. As well it secures traffic flow in the center of the city with its huge distances due to its topography. Lukas Sonderegger, Martin Kostelezky, translation by Ricardo

Original Briefing

What is the relationship between the city and its harbor?

Genoa embodies the life aquatic. Famous for being one of the most important centers of trade in the Mediterranean area, the city of Genoa would not be Genoa without its seaport. Here Christopher Columbus first learned how to paddle, and generations of Renaissance marketeers have grown exceedingly wealthy from international trade. Even nowadays, after the decay of the sea trade and the rise of the post-industrial economy, the city seems not to forget about its past, and still live by the sea. This can be said of every part of it, even of he most peripheral and distant from the coast, such as Forte Quezzi, where one of the biggest civil housing complex built after WW2 and designed by the modernist architect Luigi Daneri to host up to 4500 people. With the profile of the mountains behind it and facing the sea, the housing complex mirrors the look of a curving dock anchored to a rocky shore. Forte Quezzi's buildings are not so far from the Porto Vecchio, Genova's waterfront, that has been renewed and gentrified by the local archi-star Renzo Piano during the early '90s. After the process of redevelopment, the ancient harbor no longer looks like an abandoned factory, but has returned to its original function as propulsive commercial center, with its old functional architectures converted into malls, museums and Europe’s largest aquarium. A little commercial, but even Genoa needs a little money once its last ship has sailed.
