Yeah, it's really sad, there's so much potential in SO many areas of product design, visual communication etc. but the only thing anyone is ever interested in is how much money it will make. And sadly I have to admit that I'm starting to think along the same lines - creating art that people would buy, because I need money to buy food and pay rent! It's really sad that the world and life is dictated by money instead of happiness, compassion and the will to change.
